Shipping Container Questions, Answered
Straight answers for buyers and contracting offices.
Who manufactures ISO shipping containers in the USA?
NexGen Containers & Shelters is a domestic manufacturer of ISO shipping containers. We weld, assemble and paint 20 ft, 40 ft, Bicon, Tricon and Quadcon containers in our 150,000 sq ft factory in South Carolina, and we build 2,000+ standard containers a year.
Are NexGen shipping containers Buy American and TAA compliant?
Yes. NexGen's containers are BAA and TAA compliant. They're built in South Carolina by an American small business registered in SAM.gov as NexGen Composites LLC (CAGE 6SD02, UEI LGY3MD9DNDG1).
Does NexGen make conex boxes for the military?
Yes. Conex comes from the US Army's CONEX (Container Express) box, and the military still uses the term for ISO shipping containers. NexGen builds 20 ft and 40 ft ISO containers, Bicons, Tricons and Quadcons, and has supplied ISO containers to the US Department of Defense. CARC paint, NSN data plates and military marking are available.
What is the difference between a Bicon, Tricon and Quadcon?
They're fractions of a 20 ft ISO container. Two Bicons, three Tricons or four Quadcons couple together to match one 20 ft footprint, so a coupled set can ship as a 20 ft equivalent when the containers and couplers are certified for it. A Bicon is 9'9¾" long, a Tricon is 6'5½" and a Quadcon is about 4'9⅜". All three are 8 ft wide.
Are NexGen containers CSC certified?
Yes. Every NexGen container is CSC certified under the International Convention for Safe Containers and carries a CSC Safety Approval Plate. Our 20 ft and 40 ft containers also comply with ISO 668 and ISO 1496-1, and our quality management system is ISO 9001:2015 certified.
Can NexGen supply military containers with CARC paint and NSN data plates?
Yes. We offer standard and CARC paint, NSN data plates and military marking. NexGen is an approved source for NSN 8150-01-527-2880 (Container, Freight, Utility: ISO 20 ft, Type 1) and was awarded a Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime IDIQ contract for ISO containers in 2019.
What are the dimensions of a 20 ft and 40 ft ISO container?
A 20 ft ISO container (type 1C or 1CC) is 19'10½" (6,058 mm) long, 8'0" (2,438 mm) wide, and 8'0" (2,438 mm) or 8'6" (2,591 mm) tall. A 40 ft container (1AA) is 40'0" (12,192 mm) long, 8'0" (2,438 mm) wide and 8'6" (2,591 mm) tall. A 40 ft high cube (1AAA) is 9'6" (2,896 mm) tall. These are external dimensions from ISO 668.
